Step 1: Put the HP Printer into Wi-Fi Setup Mode

Before the HP Smart app or Windows can detect an unconfigured HP printer, it must be placed into temporary broadcast setup mode:

  • HP DeskJet 2700, 4100 & Plus: Press and hold the Wireless button and Cancel button together for 3 seconds. The Power button will flash, and the wireless icon on the LCD will begin pulsing.
  • HP ENVY 6000 & 6400 Series: Locate the physical Wi-Fi button on the rear of the printer near the power cord. Press and hold it for 3 seconds until the front edge-lighting LED bar pulses purple.
  • HP Touchscreen Printers (OfficeJet Pro / Smart Tank): Swipe down from the top of the display, tap Setup (Gear) > Network Setup > Restore Network Settings > Yes. Then tap Wireless Setup Wizard.

Step 2: Installing with HP Smart App or Offline Full Driver

Method 1 HP Smart App (Recommended for Home Users)

1. Download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store (Windows 10/11) or Apple App Store (macOS/iOS).
2. Enable Bluetooth on your computer so HP Smart can discover the beacon.
3. Click Add Printer (the plus icon) and select your model.
4. Enter your home Wi-Fi password when prompted. Once complete, HP Smart will calibrate printheads and confirm connection.

Method 2 HP Easy Start / Offline Driver Package (For Office & Advanced Users)

If you prefer not to create an HP account or HP Smart fails to complete the pairing, visit support.hp.com/drivers ↗. Enter your model number, select your OS, expand the "Driver-Product Installation Software" header, and download the Full Feature Software and Driver package.

Common HP Troubleshooting Scenarios

  • HP Printer Offline in Windows: HP printers frequently get stuck on WSD ports. Go to Printer properties > Ports > Add Port > Standard TCP/IP Port and enter the HP printer's IP address.
  • Flashing "E0" or "E4" on DeskJet Display: "E0" indicates an unusable cartridge; "E4" indicates a paper feed jam. Open the front door and inspect the cartridge carriage path.
  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: If errors persist on Windows, download HP's official diagnostic utility from support.hp.com to automatically reset spooler services.

Frequently Asked Questions

HP printers stay in Wi-Fi setup mode for only two hours after power-on. If setup is delayed, the printer exits setup mode. Reset network settings as described in Step 1 to re-enter pairing mode.
For standard HP models, you can bypass account creation by installing the offline HP Basic Driver or Full Feature Driver package. However, HP+ designated models (ending in 'e', like 2755e or 4155e) require an active HP account and continuous internet connection for cloud verification.
